I’m Tyrel Johnson, an Idaho native who wound up in the Washington DC area for graduate school and then work. Growing up in the Idaho panhandle, I fell in love with the mountains and the outdoors, and spent many hours scrambling around on rocks. I started climbing just over 3 years ago and was instantly hooked. In this short time I’ve honed my outdoor skills at crags in VW, WV, PA, TN, ME, ID, CO, and the Canary Islands.
I established my first trad route at Reed’s Creek in December of 2015 after warming up with some trail work and in between clipping bolts. Since then I’ve continued to practice stewardship at the crags in Smoke Hole and started bolting, establishing 4 routes to date with more in the works. The current climbs in the Smoke Hole Canyon guides speak volumes of the as yet untapped potential only a 3 hour drive from the DC Metro area.
