Crested Butte is tucked into a cul de sac of wilderness, in the heart of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. With access to the Elk, Ruby, Anthracite and West Elk ranges, the Crested Butte backcountry skiing zone offers a seemingly endless amount of recreation possibilities. Due to unique geography and strong orographic behavior, the western end of the zone generally receives the most snow. Snow totals can vary extremely even over the distance of one mile. The mountains accessed from Crested Butte possess some of the most extreme ski descents in North America, and some of the deepest snow in Colorado. The locations showcased in this atlas offer the entire spectrum of terrain and difficulty. Provided you already have a small amount of experience as a backcountry skier, there is something in this atlas for everyone.
